Seoul: South Korea's ruling People Power Party (PPP) has officially reinstated former labor minister Kim Moon-soo as its presidential candidate after a crucial internal vote. The decision comes after an attempt to replace Kim with former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo failed to gain enough support.According to Deutsche Welle, the PPP members voted against a motion to switch the presidential candidate from Kim to Han, affirming Kim's candidacy for the upcoming elections scheduled for June 3. A spokesperson for the party noted that the vote passed by a narrow margin, highlighting the internal divisions within the party.Kim Moon-soo expressed gratitude to his supporters and the party members, emphasizing the significance of the upcoming presidential election. "This presidential election is particularly crucial as it will determine who can overcome the current crisis facing our nation and work toward the happiness of our people. I pledge to do my utmost to secure victory and lead South Korea toward becoming an e ven greater nation," Kim stated during a media briefing after registering his candidacy with the National Election Commission.Han Duck-soo, who accepted the outcome of the vote, congratulated Kim on his reinstatement. "Now, I am stepping back from everything and returning to the life of an ordinary citizen," Han announced, following the vote. The two former contenders are scheduled to meet at the party headquarters soon.The PPP has been experiencing internal turmoil since the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol last December, which followed his attempt to impose martial law. Han had been serving as the acting president since Yoon's ouster and resigned on May 2 to pursue his presidential ambitions.Meanwhile, the opposition Democratic Party's candidate, Lee Jae-myung, is currently leading in the polls despite facing several criminal trials, adding another layer of complexity to the forthcoming election.
