‘Streaming’ Explores YouTube Culture Through Real-Time Thriller

Seoul: 'Streaming,' a new thriller starring Kang Ha-neul, dives into the intriguing world of YouTube culture. The film is the brainchild of director and scriptwriter Cho Jang-ho, who is known for his expertise in crafting mystery thrillers. Cho's fascination with the rise of livestreaming culture has led him to create this unique cinematic experience.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Cho spent nearly a year immersed in YouTube videos, watching for up to 10 hours a day to gather inspiration for the storyline. This intense research even led him to question the credibility of the content he was consuming. "If you take a step back and think about it, much of what they say doesn't actually make sense. But when someone speaks with such confidence, it is easy to be misled into believing them," Cho remarked during a press event in Seoul.

The film centers around Woo-sang, portrayed by Kang Ha-neul, a self-absorbed YouTuber who claims expertise in cold cases. As the plot unfolds, Woo-sang discovers a lead in a serial killer case and decides to livestream his pursuit. His ultimate aim is to increase his subscriber count and views, making for a gripping narrative.

In line with the film's theme, the press event itself featured a livestreamed video by Kang, filmed in real time and broadcast on a big screen at the venue. Kang expressed his initial surprise at being the sole actor present at the event but embraced the concept, finding it enjoyable.

Cho had envisioned Kang for the lead role from the script's inception, impressed by the actor's dedication and work ethic. However, the project was delayed due to Kang's military service and subsequent rise in fame with the 2019 drama "When the Camellia Blooms." Kang shared his enthusiasm for the script, noting its first-person narrative and livestreaming feel, which captivated him instantly.

The film's structure, unfolding entirely in real time through livestreaming, offers a fresh take on storytelling. Kang, who recently appeared in "Squid Game Season 2," found the script's originality and structure appealing, adding that he drew inspiration from people he preferred to avoid to portray his character's narcissistic traits.

"Streaming" marks Cho's directorial debut, following his success with the mystery novel "The Rapture 1992" and the web-based novel "Justice." The film is set for release on March 21.
