Seoul: The Supreme Court has finalized a 30-year prison sentence for a medical student, identified by the surname Choi, who was convicted of murdering his partner on a rooftop in the Gangnam district last year. The incident took place near Gangnam Station in southern Seoul, where Choi, 26, stabbed his partner multiple times in May of the previous year.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the couple had secretly registered their marriage three weeks prior to the crime without informing their parents. The woman's parents, upon discovering the marriage, sought to have it annulled. Investigations revealed that Choi was concerned about the potential impact on his academic credentials, which led to an argument with his partner. During this confrontation, he decided to kill her and subsequently procured a weapon to carry out the act.
Initially, Choi received a 26-year prison sentence during the first trial. However, the appellate court later increased the sentence to 30 years. The Supreme Court has now upheld this decision, which also includes a provision for five years of probation for Choi.
