Tax Agency Launches Special Crackdown to Recover Over 2 Trillion Won in Unpaid Taxes

Seoul: Tax authorities on Thursday launched a special enforcement program aimed at recovering more than 2 trillion won (US$1.44 billion) in unpaid taxes accumulated so far this year. A total of 2.12 trillion won of taxes remained unpaid as of August, according to the National Tax Service (NTS). The amount has steadily increased in recent years, rising from 1.58 trillion won in 2021 to 2.08 trillion won last year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the NTS announced it will conduct a special crackdown until December 12, focusing on long-term, high-amount, and newly delinquent taxpayers. The agency plans to deploy all available administrative tools, including asset tracking, taxpayer interviews, home searches, and property seizures.

The NTS, however, stated it will offer incentives, such as installment payment plans and collection deferrals, for delinquent taxpayers who demonstrate a willingness to pay.
