U.N. Chief Confirms Confidence in South Korea’s Democratic Principles Following Yoon’s Ouster

Seoul: U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres has expressed "full" confidence in South Korea's commitment to democratic principles, his spokesperson said Friday, following the ouster of former President Yoon Suk Yeol this week.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Seoul's Constitutional Court unanimously upheld the impeachment of Yoon on Friday, removing him from office due to his imposition of martial law in December. This decision paves the way for a snap presidential election, expected to occur in early June.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for Guterres, addressed the media during a press briefing, acknowledging the developments in the Republic of Korea, which is South Korea's official name. He emphasized the secretary general's trust in South Korea's adherence to democratic principles, as well as its capability to maintain a peaceful and stable trajectory.
