Seoul: Police, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), and the Presidential Security Service (PSS) convened on Tuesday to deliberate on executing a warrant for the detention of President Yoon Suk Yeol, following his brief imposition of martial law.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting took place amidst speculation that investigators are preparing for a second attempt to detain Yoon this week. This follows a previous unsuccessful attempt earlier this month. A PSS official disclosed that the meeting was initiated after receiving an official request from the police.
The CIO and police are reportedly strategizing to deploy approximately 1,000 investigators to ensure the successful detention of Yoon. Their previous effort was impeded when PSS personnel blocked their entry into Yoon's official residence in Seoul. Since his impeachment by the National Assembly on December 14, Yoon is believed to have remained confined to his residence, resulting in his suspension from official duties.
The CIO has secured two consecutive court warrants to detain Yoon on charges of insurrection and abuse of power related to the imposition of martial law on December 3. This ongoing situation has sparked worries about potential physical confrontations among law enforcement, the PSS, and thousands of protesters who have been demonstrating outside Yoon's residence, either supporting or opposing his arrest.
