According to Yonhap News Agency, on this day in 1964, South Korea and Kenya established diplomatic ties, marking the beginning of a collaborative relationship between the two nations. This diplomatic expansion continued in 1992 when South Korea and Turkmenistan also forged diplomatic ties, further solidifying South Korea's presence on the international stage.
In 1999, South Korea advanced its economic relationships by signing an investment treaty with Israel, aiming to bolster mutual economic growth and collaboration. Fast forward to 2009, South Korea celebrated a major sports achievement when Kim Yu-na secured victory in the women's singles competition at the Four Continents figure skating event in Vancouver. Kim's remarkable performance included a world-record short program score of 72.24 points, followed by 116.83 points in free skating.
The day also marks a significant event in 2016 when North Korea launched a long-range rocket, claiming it to be a satellite, in defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions. This act highlighted ongoing tensions involving the use of ballistic missile technology by North Korea.
In 2019, U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy Stephen Biegun engaged in working-level talks with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Hyok-chol, in Pyongyang. These discussions aimed to arrange a planned second summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, which ultimately took place in Vietnam on February 27-28 but concluded without any agreement.
