Hybe Launches Chinese Subsidiary to Support Artist Expansion

Beijing: Hybe, the K-pop company behind globally recognized groups such as BTS, Seventeen, and Enhypen, has announced the establishment of a Chinese subsidiary to aid in the expansion of its artists into the Chinese market. This strategic move marks the launch of Hybe China Co., Ltd. in Beijing on April 2, positioning it as Hybe's fourth international branch following its establishments in Japan, the United States, and Latin America.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Beijing-based subsidiary is set to focus on supporting the activities of Hybe artists within China. This development comes as rival K-pop agencies, including SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment, have already established their own Chinese branches to capitalize on the market. Notably, SM and JYP have already introduced China-based idol groups, WayV and Boy Story, respectively.

Industry insiders suggest that Hybe's recent move could be indicative of growing anticipation that China might ease its unofficial restrictions on South Korean entertainment content, which have been in place for several years. However, sources familiar with the situation indicate that Hybe China is not immediately planning to launch a talent audition program or debut a local K-pop group. Instead, it is expected to play a more limited role compared to Hybe's other international branches, like Hybe Japan and Hybe America, which have successfully launched localized idol groups.

Prior to this move, Pledis Entertainment, a label under Hybe, had already set up its own Chinese unit, Pledis China, back in 2018 before Hybe acquired it. A Hybe official confirmed that Pledis China will continue focusing on its existing role of supporting Pledis artists.
