Seoul: Lawmakers of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) visited the Supreme Prosecutors Office (SPO) on Monday to protest against its decision not to appeal a court ruling to release impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the lawmakers, led by Rep. Choo Mi-ae, entered the SPO building at around 10:30 a.m., holding placards demanding the resignation of Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung. They reportedly plan to meet with Lee Jin-dong, the deputy prosecutor general.
Yoon, who was detained in January on charges of inciting an insurrection through his failed bid to impose martial law on December 3, was released from jail on Saturday. This followed the prosecution's decision not to appeal the previous day's ruling by the Seoul Central District Court, which declared his detention invalid.
Earlier on Monday, Shim defended his decision as part of the due process of law, rejecting the opposition party's calls for his resignation. The DP lawmakers accused Shim of abusing his power and committing dereliction of duty by failing to appeal the court ruling on Yoon.
