Seoul: A group of North Korean soldiers on Tuesday briefly crossed the inter-Korean land border into the South before returning to their side after South Korean troops fired warning shots, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said. The incident occurred when approximately ten North Korean troops crossed the Military Demarcation Line inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas in an eastern front-line area around 5 p.m.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korean troops responded by airing warning broadcasts and firing warning shots, prompting the North Korean soldiers to retreat northward. The JCS assured that the South Korean military is closely monitoring North Korean military activity and taking necessary measures based on operational procedures.
This incident marks the latest crossing by North Korean troops within the DMZ, following a similar occurrence in June last year. The brief incursion underscores ongoing tensions and the fragile nature of the peace maintained along the heavily fortified border.
