N. Korea and Belarus Engage in Economic Talks to Foster Bilateral Cooperation

Pyongyang: North Korea and Belarus have conducted economic discussions in Pyongyang, expressing a mutual desire for enhanced bilateral cooperation and exchanges, as reported by state media on Thursday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, a Belarusian government delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shuleiko arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday to participate in the third meeting of the intergovernmental joint committee for trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The two nations held sectoral economic talks on Wednesday, focusing on strategies to promote cooperation in various fields in preparation for a bilateral protocol, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). During a banquet on Wednesday, North Korea's Vice Premier Jong Myong-su emphasized that the delegation's visit would further develop amicable relations between the two countries. Jong expressed confidence in the vibrant future of bilateral cooperation and exchanges, according to KCNA.

Shuleiko, in turn, pledged continued cooperation and contact between the two nations to enhance the welfare of their peoples, the report stated. This event marked the first meeting of the intergovernmental joint committee for trade and economic cooperation between North Korea and Belarus in 19 years, with the previous meeting held in Minsk in June 2006.

Belarus has shown support for Russia's actions in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Furthermore, top diplomats from North Korea and Belarus convened in Pyongyang in July 2024, as the two countries continue to strengthen military ties with Russia.
