Ruling Party Criticizes Opposition After Court Dismisses Impeachment of Chief Auditor

Seoul: The ruling People Power Party (PPP) criticized the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) on Thursday following the Constitutional Court's rejection of the impeachment of the chief state auditor and three prosecutors. The court's unanimous decision dismissed the impeachments of Choe Jae-hae, chair of the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI), Lee Chang-soo, chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office, and two other senior prosecutors.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kwon Young-se, the PPP's interim leader, expressed approval of the court's decision during a press conference at the National Assembly. He referred to the ruling as a "historic ruling" that halted what he described as the DP's excessive use of political impeachment. Kwon emphasized that the Constitutional Court's decision protected the independence of the BAI and the prosecution from what he characterized as the DP's politically motivated impeachment attempts.

Kwon also called on the court to apply the "same strict standards" in the ongoing impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
